The Secret in the Curry

Name: Anonymous

Dishes: Chicken Curry

Cuisine: Australian

For one Australian family, a curry recipe carries more than tradition; it holds wartime memories and secrets passed down through generations.

The contributor’s family chicken curry recipe began with their grandfather, known as Pop, who prepared it during World War II after long, cold days. The meal was such a success that he became the camp’s designated chef.

One of the meal's most important elements was that it was budget-friendly and provided large servings that were still warm and filling. Pop used chicken legs that he let simmer for 12 hours, and the meal became known for its flavors and the stories shared during preparation.

Pop recalled shared adventures of stealing curry powder from other camps to prepare his meal, and the stories of eating a warm meal after a hard day. Still, beyond chicken and curry powder, he never revealed the other ingredients. As a result, the curry became a family secret that later generations have continued to attempt to perfect.

Years later, the contributor has managed to recreate the curry using curry powder, coconut milk, garlic, onion, potatoes, peas, corn, and notably no carrots. Yet they never learned their 'Pops' true secret recipe for the curry.

While the dish began to be valued for its affordability, warmth, and flavor, it is now significant as a shared family story e of wartime memories, connection, and secret ingredients.

The curry remains tied to the grandfather's adventures, though the exact memory remains a secret. The contributor continues to cook new versions of the curry, hoping to recreate the original flavor. Through these adaptations, the true value of the curry is clear: preserving does not always mean recreating it exactly. Instead, it is continuing to share Pop’s cooking and stories over the years, while experimenting with a meaningful family meal.
